Feeling a bit nostalgic

Recommended Posts

Not been on here in ages, so I'm as guilty as anyone, but not being a facebook / instagram user I find the slow death of the forums such a shame [yes I know this has been covered many times before] Scrolling down the homepage on here and seeing pretty much nothing dated after 2017/18 genuinely made me feel sad

Was just going through some of the how-to's too and most of the links / pics are dead, which is a massive shame as I learnt so much from forums over the years, there was such a wealth of knowledge that just seems to have been lost. I sell quite a few bits on ebay and the dumb ass questions I get asked everyday seems to prove that all anyone does these days is look at pretty pictures - I had a Jetta bench up for sale and got loads of questions;

Yoof of today - "Will this straight fit in a Golf?" [no preamble, that would be too much strain on the fingers clearly]

Me - "Hi, no it is a Jetta bench so would require mods to fit in a Golf, Cheers"

Yoof - "Oh right, what would I have to do?"

Seriously?! Firstly, who the hell has a Mk2 Golf and doesn't know the difference between Golfs and Jettas and secondly, why are people incapable of doing any research themselves!?

Oh and yes I know I'm insulting everyone and their dog by writing 'Yoof', but it seems easier to presume these idle people with inane questions are young, while in actual fact Golfs are bloody expensive these days so they're probably not young at all... Besides this isn't posted on facebook so no-one will read it anyway 😆

Anyway, bit of an old man rant for someone in their 30s, but I'm losing my workshop in the coming months and have neither the money nor the time to carry on with old Vdubs really so feeling a bit miserable. Hopefully this self driving / electric car 'revolution' will die a death and this isn't the last few years of driving classic cars, otherwise I'm gonna be really pissed off when I'm in my 40s 😆

Big thanks to whoever keeps this site running by the way 👍

Simeon, decent rant but I need to correct you that when your in your 30's your not an old man. I'm closer to 50 than 40 and still class myself as yoof!

I can relate to what you say and unfortunately I'm on FB but only for the car parts and such, but i find myself getting wound up most of the time. Cnts cant help themselves. An example, a guy had a lovely set of RM for sale at a decent price. First 2 comments - FFS budget tyres, blah blah. Next one - poverty spec wheels. I really dislike it but that's where 99% of cars and parts are for sale these days.

Yes, shame Dubforce is quiet now, was a great forum years ago. I still like a post or 2 to let folk know what a state of a car I bought and how it's coming back to life, not sure who reads it but none the less i still like to contribute to the forum.

Can't you find more storage, you know that if you sell up, it's only a matter of time before your looking again!

Yeah looking for some storage / workshop, but problem is cost really as it makes a hobby really expensive when you're forking out each month just to put a roof over the cars.

Best bet is to buy another house with a big garage and then rent the house out I guess, but for some reason developers over the years have focused more on the living space than the size of the garage !? 😂

I guess I should have a poke about on facebook if I'm needing to sell lots of bits, but always found it lacks any sort of organisation and 'threading' like you get on the forums, so unless someone sees your item in the first 5 minutes before it disappears off the bottom of the page I'm not sure how people are supposed to find stuff.

Back for my annual vist 😂

Only sold one of the cars as I found temporary free storage, but got to move them again end of Feb so back in the same old predicament..

In other news, had a kid (well, the wife did), still haven't finished renovating a dooer upper we bought 15 months ago to rent out, got bored of selling on ebay as too many idiots and not enough £1 listing weekends (ebay are on to me clearly), but my absolute only aim for 2020 is to get my Corrado G60 back on the road .. I'll update again hopefully before 2021 😂

What's everyone else been up to?

Great post Simeon

Unfortunately, I feel exactly the same about the forum. I keep dropping in from time to time hoping to see it a little more active, sadly it remains the same.

I'm not knocking the old girl, it's great that the forum is still up and running. Seems most of us have their cars tucked away and life have taken over.

A little from me, I've sold all but one of my Mk2's and just have the Rallye hidden away,

I'v settled down, had two kids and spend too much time at work.

Hope all the old boys and girls that still come on here are all keeping well 🙂

Same time, same place 2021 Simeon?

All the best, Paul

PS, any ideas on why my sentences have 1 space between text ?

Just popped in also to say "hello". Used to be a frequent visitor years ago when I had the old G60 but thats long gone now 😥

I'm slowly getting back into it all after some time out away from the "scene". It all got too clicky and the fun went out of it all overnight. People with their credit cards spending 1000s every other month just to change their wheels or dropping it off at a garage to pick it up a month later all done!   I realised (after being told for years by the wife) that the G60 only came out of its lair once in a blue moon. Think I did 2 maybe 3 shows per year and probably 100 miles a month in it.  It was a lot of money sat there (looking at values now I should of kept it #hindsight ). Hopefully this weekend I'll have a MK4 Anniversary on the drive that I can use a bit more.

I think a lot of forums have gone or moved on from when I used to lurk around here. And yes there was a huge amount of knowledge that was freely given out to help people in need. The knowledge had been earned and learnt the hard way by various people getting their hands dirty and cutting themselves on random bits of wire/metal in an engine bay. This place and others were a mecca for information and I'll always thank / respect you all for that.

All you 30 year old yoofs can do one too - I'm 50 next year 🤣😋

Hello all you oldies. Great to see 3 new posts on the forum . I'm now 48!

Im in a love hate relationship. Hate the rallye then love it again, i hate it just now as i have to fork out 1000's more on a paint job. Currently looking for bits to complete, simple thing like a radiator is non existent so i hate that as well.

I moved house in November to the country so got a huge shed with the house, perfect for my cars. Have my oaky 16v and an 8v daily hack, found a bbm for 500 notes which i don't need but cant resist at that price, just needs front jacking points and TLC so a long term thing. Just sold the 32 last night, I'm not paying 570 a year road tax, lovely car but fk that.

Not too keen on the shows either anymore, only do Elsecar as its a good crowd and like to see what my rallye can or could be. One decent show up in Scotland is clean fest but that's getting to the credit card cars now also.

My girls are 14 & 17 now so plenty time to waste more coin on the cars.
