Are these genuine E50's? HELP

15 posts in this topic

I've put a deposit down on these E50's but there's a few things making me suspect they may be replicas but as there is so many different types it's hard to tell. The holes centre PCD holes don't line up correctly too the pattern on a couple which raised alarm bells as he said he didn't think they'd been re drilled and seriously doubt BBS would make a blatent error like this from the factory. They could have been redrilled and painted before he bought them though.. The other thing is that the BBS E50 is stamped on the centre of the wheel where as a lot of the ones i've seen have raised logo and some times on the pattern rather than the centre..

Here's the ad on E38: http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=510543

As it's so much money i'm being super cautious but might just be winding myself up.. Any help much appreciated..

Cheers boys

The guy has told me they're all genuine BBS. I've seen photos of stamped ones like these that are genuine. Just feel a second opinion would give me a bit more confidence if anyone is knowledgable on these kind if wheels.

Cheers

Can't really help you on the original or replica question but I see what you mean about the offset holes to the pattern. Google images have many 5 stud wheels and none look to have the offset like on these ones.
We're 5 x 120 only available on beemers? So a question to ask is if they were an option with a BMW, if not then they might have been redrilled, also no pics of the underside, might be worth a pic to see if there is evidence of machining.
For that kind of money I'd have to be sure they were genuine and I would expect them to be finished, is he close to you, can you go and have a look?
Hope it works out for you, genuine or not, they are an awesome wheel

Cheers Jonk.. I knocked him down to £1630 so thought that wasn't too bad? I'm just eager to get some decent wheels but may wait as I'm not 100%.. Even a guy from BBS I e-mailed said he couldn't be sure from the pic. The earlier ones were stamped like that but also had a number either side of the centre bore saying the centre height and PCD ie. 10 - 120. But these letters were big and not deeply stamped and as they look like they've had paint or powder coat that coul easily full those but keep the stamp.. There are tests to check whether they are mag or ally like putting vinegar on bare metal or scraping it to see the texture but it's an alloy with ally so again hard to tell.. After reading a massive thread on Wheel-whores I may be better airing for a set built as the guy recon around 1600 should get a nice set complete. I think new from BBS it's gonna be a lot more than that. Prob almost double. Be nice to know they're brand new tho :)

I'll post prices on here when I know. There's a new set of the brand new genuine BBS centres for 2000 euros on german ebay. Could get pricey :/

Cheers

Yeah cheers man. A guy on wheel whores that really knows his mag wheels and owns a few sets posts quite a lot said about them. That rs felgen guy is a proper BBS dealer too, might drop him an e-mail.. They look good quality but kind of hoping I could get a real set for that kind of money. Could be an option tho as you could dial them in perfect and know they're strong and good to go! I run a machine shop so could knock up some custom centres but obviously mag would be better and I think the cold forging helps towards their strength so machining mag isn't really an option.. Could knock up some carbon fibre centres  ^_^ That was going to be my plan for a mk1 when I do a project at some point. Once the rallye's mint. Hope I get something sorted in time for elsecar.. Not a fan of borbets at all  <_<

A guy called Klaus at BBS racing. They started remaking a few batches of E50 & E30 centres a couple year back and now do them to order.. I'll post the full e-mail 2moz if you wanna know prices and what they can customise to order or give me you're e-mail and I'll forward them on.. Just waiting to hear final details but I think you can choose centre bore height, PCD and centre bore size. They have a few sets of NOS Stainless hub caps (discontinued) and loads of plastic ones too. They will only sell the stainless ones with a set of wheels tho. Very reasonably priced overall IMO considering they're built to order

Buy the centres from rs-felgen.de.........they will make to any spec.....have them powder coated yourself.

But buy all the dishes, barrels & bolts from felgenfuchs.de  (do radinox to)

trouble with original magnesium, is eventually it will corrode so much that they will basically become scrap.  refurbing mag is a complete pain, they need to be stripped, x-rayed, special treatments, special coatings before you even get to paint.

the rs-felgens are sooo much better in alloy

Yeah cheers, they do look good. I've found out since then that as the backs of the spokes are flat i'd need a pretty big collar height to clear the caliper which in turn will loose the amount of dish I was after.. May be a possibilty for the future or maybe brand new from BBS but think i've found another set of wheels I can run for a couple years. Maybe when I do a re-spray in the future at some point.. Won't go for second hand mag either way.

they do an option to cast a fatter backpad to allow for big calipers

use google chrome to view site, as it automatically translates it.

Yeah BBS do the same, you can choose the height. Just means I won't be able to run the kind of dish I wanted as it'd poke too much. Think I worked out it'd be 1.5 and 2.5'' and was hoping for at least an inch more on both as the centres won't sit flush in the lip at that height. Maybe an option for the future but i'd rather spend it the cash on holidays this year.

Cheers dude
